Yes, it’s early in the field hockey season – wicked early in fact.
But from what I’m seeing in the standings so far – which are again, too early to predict or really constitute any rational long-term CAL title hopefuls – I don’t like what’s going on. Not one bit.
The five River Rival Region teams in Cape Ann League play (Newburyport, Amesbury, Triton, Pentucket, Georgetown) are a combined 2-5-2. Not exactly what I’d call great, but seeing as how ties lie somewhere in that gray zone….and it’s only two weeks into the season with already one rain-out, things could be worse.
But regardless of the records, there are two very good games scheduled for this week – both taking place on Thursday 9/11.
Amesbury at Triton at 7:00 p.m.
The Amesbury Indians (0-1-0), who lost a close one to Masconomet in the season opener and missed their second game due to weather, is poised to earn their first victory of the season, but the Triton Vikings (0-1-1), who is also looking to win their first match, is coming off a tie against the only RR team in the CAL without a loss in the Newburyport Clippers.
Masconomet at Pentucket at 3:45 p.m.
It’s no surprise that the Masco Cheiftans are already 2-0-0 this year, with wins over Wilmington (0-2-0) and Amesbury, but the Pentucket Sachems (1-1-0) are off a win against a struggling Wilmington team and are looking to defend their home field.
